Dawn Chorus
David Subacchi
It begins as early as four am,
Sometimes earlier,
So persistent I rise
To close any open window,
But it is still audible.
Hard to tell
Whether I am listening,
To sounds of distress
Or cries of joy,
It will not be silenced.
I search on-line
For an explanation,
That tells me only
That most of these birds
Are male
And that their noisy chorus,
Is simply to attract
The attention of those,
With whom they wish
To mate.
Were I amongst
Their lusty number,
I would applaud
Such enthusiasm,
But counsel against
Its vulgar expression.
